Cloud 189

Cloud 189 (天翼云盘, cloud.189.cn), formerly known as Tianyi Cloud, is a cloud storage service launched by China Telecom in December 2011. It is developed and operated by Century Dragon Information Network Co., Ltd., a subsidiary under China Telecom, one of China's three major state-owned telecommunications operators. The service is positioned as a personal and family data center, offering cross-device file storage, mobile photo backup, family album sharing, and cloud video playback.

Cloud 189 supports both personal and family cloud storage spaces. By inviting family members through contacts, a single account can upload files for the entire family to share. Content such as photos and videos can be browsed across TV, computer, and mobile devices simultaneously. As of 2018, Cloud 189 had served over 430 million users.

As a state-backed service running on China Telecom's dedicated network infrastructure, Cloud 189 emphasizes high-speed transmission and enterprise-level security protection as key differentiators from commercially operated alternatives.

Cloud 189 requires a Chinese phone number to register, and accessing the service requires a Chinese IP address for stable connections. Purchasing a membership plan also requires a Chinese payment method such as Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Feature Overview

Fast Upload and Download

Cloud 189 uses China Telecom's dedicated transmission channels with multi-province intelligent acceleration. Files including HD videos are uploaded and downloaded through exclusive high-speed pipelines rather than shared public internet routing. Super Members receive a dedicated upload channel for even faster transfer rates.

Family Sharing

Cloud 189 supports a family cloud space separate from personal storage. Users can invite family members through their contact list, and files uploaded by one member are accessible to the entire family group. Family albums with smart photo recognition support categorized browsing by time, person, or location, and content can be viewed synchronously across TV, computer, and mobile devices.

Photo Backup

The mobile client automatically backs up photos and videos from the device camera roll to cloud storage. All backed-up photos are saved in original quality without compression. Backed-up content is accessible from any device including computer and iPad. Cloud 189 also supports automatic backup of WeChat files.

Cloud Video Playback

Cloud 189 includes exclusive cloud decoding technology for online video playback directly from cloud storage without downloading. Videos can be streamed across TV, PC, and mobile clients. The family sharing setup allows family members to watch content on a TV while others manage files on a phone or computer.

Private Space

Users can store sensitive files in a dedicated private space within their account. Accessing private space requires secondary verification via dynamic password, keeping sensitive content separated from general file storage.

Security

Cloud 189 uses end-to-end multi-layer encryption for file transmission with anti-phishing and anti-theft protection. As a China Telecom product, it is backed by state-level security infrastructure. Cloud 189 received the Best Secure Cloud Storage Award in 2022 and 2023, and the "Best Secure Cloud Storage Star" award from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 2018.

Development History

December 2011: Launch as Tianyi Cloud Storage

The web portal, PC client, Android client, and iOS client for Tianyi Cloud Storage version 1.0 all launched simultaneously in December 2011, making it one of the earlier Chinese cloud storage platforms to debut across all major platforms at once.

July 2012: Renamed to Tianyi Cloud, Commercial Launch

Tianyi Cloud Storage was officially renamed to Tianyi Cloud on July 15, 2012, with the service moving into full commercial operation. China Telecom began opening the platform to developers in March 2013, providing an open portal and application center for third-party integration.

2014: 200 Million Users and Internet Plus Strategy

Tianyi Cloud reached 200 million users by August 2014 and ranked in the top two search results across major app markets. In April 2014, it launched an "Internet Plus" storage ecosystem plan, integrating internally with China Telecom services and externally with leading internet products to provide converged cloud services.

2015: 300 Million Users and Family Cloud Strategy

The user base surpassed 300 million by December 2015. At the China Telecom Tianyi Terminal Trade Expo in July 2015, the concepts of "Family Cloud" and "Smart Home Devices" were formally introduced, with Tianyi Cloud taking responsibility for Family Cloud development. The "X Plus Cloud Plan" was also announced to expand cooperation in mobile, home, and enterprise cloud service areas.

December 2016: Renamed to Cloud 189 and V5.0 Launch

"Tianyi Cloud" was officially renamed to "Cloud 189" in December 2016 alongside the launch of V5.0. The new version introduced a three-cloud strategy covering personal, family, and enterprise use, and debuted the Cloud 189 Super Member service.

2018: 430 Million Users and Security Recognition

The user base exceeded 430 million by June 2018. Cloud 189 received the "Best Secure Cloud Storage Star" award from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences at the same time, reflecting its positioning around security and reliability in the Chinese cloud storage market.

2019: 5G Edition and V8.0

A 5G Ultra-Fast Edition of Cloud 189 was unveiled at China Telecom's 5G Innovation Conference in April 2019, ahead of China's commercial 5G rollout. V8.0 followed in May 2019 with expanded features.

November 2021: Industry Self-Discipline Agreement

Under guidance from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Cloud 189 joined seven other major cloud storage providers in signing the "Self-Discipline Convention for Personal Cloud Storage Service User Experience Protection" in Beijing. All signatories committed to launching equal upload and download speed products for all user types by end of 2021.
