Alipan (also known as Aliyun Drive) is a personal cloud storage service developed by Hangzhou Duanqu Network Media Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Alibaba Group. It entered public beta on March 22, 2021, making Alibaba the last of China's BAT giants (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) to enter the personal cloud storage market. The service is built on Alibaba Cloud's infrastructure and positions itself around unlimited transfer speeds and enterprise-level data security.
New registered users receive free storage space, while paid members can expand capacity up to 20 TB through Super Member plans. Key features include high-speed file transfers, AI-powered file categorization, smart photo backup, online preview for multiple file formats, and cross-platform synchronization. The service operates without advertisements across all platforms.
In March 2022, Alipan introduced its membership service while publicly committing to maintain unlimited upload and download speeds for non-member users. In February 2024, the service began restricting features for accounts that had exceeded their storage quota. In July 2024, speed limits were introduced for third-party applications accessing Alipan.
Alipan is only accessible within mainland China. Registration requires a Chinese phone number, and accessing the service requires a Chinese IP address for stable connections. Purchasing a membership plan also requires a Chinese payment method such as Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Alipan offers unlimited upload and download speeds for all users, a core commitment made when the service launched. This differentiates it from services like Baidu Pan, which throttles speeds for free users. Since July 2024, speed limits apply specifically to third-party applications accessing the service, with a separate benefit package available to restore full speeds.
The platform automatically categorizes uploaded files using AI, enabling quick access without manual folder management. Photos are backed up and organized by date, location, and subject. A smart space feature, introduced in March 2023, automatically sorts transferred files into categories for faster retrieval.
Alipan supports original quality video playback with frame-by-frame preview and up to 60 fps streaming for members. It also supports online preview of documents and images, including RAW and TIFF formats. Online file decompression and Office document editing are available directly within the app.
All stored files are encrypted using AES-256. Data in transit is encrypted via SSL/TLS. The service complies with ISO 27001 and GDPR security standards. A file vault feature provides an additional layer of protection for sensitive files. The platform operates without advertisements across all platforms.
User files are hashed, encrypted, and distributed across Alibaba Cloud Object Storage (OSS) and Table Store (OTS). This enables regional storage for faster access and achieves a data reliability of 99.9999999999%.
Downloads use Alibaba Cloud's global acceleration network with multi-layer data consistency checks to assemble files in milliseconds. Frequently shared content is intelligently routed to the nearest CDN node for optimized delivery speeds.
Alipan entered public beta on March 22, 2021, entering the personal cloud market as the last of the BAT giants to do so. The product was led by Qi Junyuan, founder of Teambition, which was acquired by Alibaba for 100 million USD in 2019.
Under guidance from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Alipan signed the Self-Discipline Convention for Personal Cloud Storage Service User Experience Protection, committing to launch undifferentiated speed products providing equal upload and download speeds for all users.
Alipan introduced its paid membership service. At launch, the Member tier offered 6 TB of storage at 12 CNY per month, and the Super Member tier offered 20 TB at 30 CNY per month. Non-member users continued to receive unlimited speeds as previously committed.
Alipan announced that accounts exceeding their storage quota would have key features restricted starting March 1, 2024, including online playback, upload, download, and sharing. Users could resolve restrictions by upgrading to a paid plan, purchasing additional capacity, or deleting excess files.
Alipan began limiting transfer speeds for third-party applications accessing the service. A separate third-party benefit package was introduced at 10 CNY per month to restore full speeds for users relying on external apps.
Reports emerged of a bug that allowed users to view other users' cloud photos under specific conditions involving album folder creation and image categorization. Alipan acknowledged the reports and stated the issue had been submitted to relevant departments for investigation.
